5 Things to Avoid After Teeth Whitening

Congratulations on your brighter smile! Whether you've just had an in-office whitening treatment at Dr. Haber's Santa Monica practice or you're using a take-home kit, the first 48 hours after whitening are critical. Here are five things you should absolutely avoid.

1. Dark-Colored Beverages

Coffee, red wine, tea, and dark sodas are your teeth's worst enemies right after whitening. The whitening process temporarily opens the pores in your enamel, making them more absorbent than usual.

What to do instead: Stick to water, milk, or clear beverages for at least 48 hours.

2. Highly Pigmented Foods

Just like dark beverages, foods with strong pigments can stain freshly whitened teeth. Avoid berries, tomato sauce, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, beets, and curry-based dishes for at least two days after treatment.

What to do instead: Follow the "white diet" — eat light-colored foods like chicken, fish, rice, pasta (with white sauce), bananas, cauliflower, and egg whites.

3. Tobacco Products

Smoking or chewing tobacco is one of the fastest ways to re-stain your teeth after whitening. The tar and nicotine in tobacco products cause deep, stubborn staining that can quickly reverse your whitening results.

4. Acidic Foods and Drinks

Citrus fruits, vinegar, pickles, and acidic drinks like lemonade can irritate sensitive teeth after whitening and may weaken the enamel during its recovery period.

5. Colored Dental Products

This one surprises many patients: colored mouthwash (blue, green, or purple varieties) and colored toothpaste can contribute to staining during the 48-hour window after whitening.
