TMJ / BRUXISM / SLEEP DISORDER

TMJ / BRUXISM

CAUSES:

In today’s world coupled with our busy lifestyles, many do not realise that they are clenching or grinding their teeth either during the day or at night.

SYMPTOMS:

Your facial muscles are most relaxed when your teeth are apart so signs and symptoms that may present could be:

  • sore or tight head and neck muscles in the morning
  • cracked tooth syndrome where there is discomfort when biting
  • signs of tooth wear (sharp or rough edges of teeth)
  • a clicky jaw ('Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction' [TMJ] )

TREATMENT:

It is important that you monitor yourself and be aware of the symptoms so that it can be treated easily with a plate that you can wear at night. This plate is also known as a nightguard or occlusal splint.

SLEEP APNOEA

CAUSES:

Sleep apnoea is caused by partial or complete blockage of a person's throat while they are asleep. The breathing of a person with sleep apnoea can stop for anywhere between a few and 90 seconds, which causes them to wake up briefly.

SYMPTOMS:

Individuals who might be suffering from sleep apnoea may experience some of these symptoms:

  • headaches
  • tiredness during the day
  • waking up choking
  • gasping during your sleep
  • dry or sore throat in the morning
  • deterioration in concentration and memory.

TREATMENT:

It is most important to seek specialist care to diagnose the condition so that it can be treated appropriately to increase the quality of your general health.

Besides the CPAP machine to help alleviate sleep apnoea, we can construct a snoreguard. It is a dual plate worn at night to bring the jaw forwards and lift the soft palate to open up the airways.
