What Do I Need to Know About Dental Filling Procedures?

About tooth Filling

What are Dental filings?

Dental fillings are materials used by dentists to restore a tooth to its natural shape due to damages caused by cavities, cracks and fractures or to correct improver bites and close the space beteen teeth. Composite or white filling is tooth coloured and used to repair a tooth by closely matching to the colour of existing teeth. They are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or the more visible areas of the teeth.

What are the different types of filling materials dentists use to restore teeth?

There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Typically, your filling would either be composite resin or porcelain; the choice depends on your tooth strength. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.

When should I have dental fillings?

Dental fillings are considered for the following conditions:
  • Fractures
  • Chipped teeth
  • Closing space between two teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Worn teeth

How are Dental fillings placed?

Dental fillings are usually placed in one appointment. While the tooth is numb, your dentist will remove the decay as necessary. The space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed. If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special medication will be applied for added protection. The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.

What can I expect after the dental filling procedure?

It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when composite fillings are first placed; however, this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling.

What are the instructions for care and recovery after dental filling procedure?

You will be given care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new fillings.

What is the durability of composite fillings?

As with most dental restorations, composite fillings are not permanent and may someday have to be replaced. They are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

What are dental fillings cost?

The cost of dental fillings depends on the quantity of material used, the type of dental procedure and type material used. For example, the cost to fill one tooth cavity is obviously less than the filling of two teeth and so one. Also, the type of procedure as for example in cosmetic dentistry, such as closing the gaps between two teeth or more. In addition the type of material will also influence the cost of dental fillings; resign is less expensive than porcelain.

Patients and dentists can only be sure of the costs of dental fillings treatment after each individual dental assessment at the dentist chair! A good dentist will give the patient all available options for each specific case and pricing before proceeding with the treatment.

What are the safety measures we practice with regard to teeth fillings?

We are a strictly amalgam (mercury) free practice. We use only safe, biocompatible tooth coloured filling material for your overall health.

The decision to have your old amalgam fillings replaced is an important one and you want a practice who share the same concerns for safety as you do, because of the component of mercury in the material. All our amalgam replacements are done under a Rubber Dam. These are thin films of latex that isolates teeth with the amalgam fillings and create a barrier between the mercury dust that is produced when amalgam fillings are removed. This means all the mercury waste are safely removed from your mouth without any fear of contaminating your body.
