What are dental implants?

Missing teeth? Improve your appearance, comfort, speech, self-confidence and overall oral health with dental implants.

A useful part of cosmetic dentistry, restoration dentistry, therapeutic dentistry and dental implants are artificial teeth that are implanted in place of teeth that have been lost or extracted.

Dental implants replace missing teeth and roots and provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures. They provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.

How do they work?

Implants replace the tooth root with an artificial root that is surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone.  The tooth (usually titanium) is attached to artificial root implants and is very natural looking in order to enhance or restore a patient’s smile!

Why consider dental implants?

At Dental Care Glebe, our patients in the Sydney CBD come to us for dental implants in order to:

  • Replace missing teeth without affecting the adjacent teeth.
  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space.
  • Restore a patient’s confident smile.
  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion.
  • Restore or enhance facial tissues.
  • Support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable.

What are the pre-treatment test involved?

When you come to Dental Care Glebe in the Sydney CBD, we provide excellent patient care and service. The process of getting implants requires a number of visits that will involve X-rays and impressions (moulds) taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant.

How are dental implants placed?

Local anaesthesia will be applied, and the tooth root implant (a small post made of titanium) is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. This is left to heal and integrate together to anchor securely into the jawbone. This process usually takes up to six months.

Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place.  With other implants, the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.

After several weeks of healing, and once the implant has bonded to the bone, the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor.  Because several fittings may be required, this step may take one to two months to complete.  After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.

What can I expect after the procedure?

In terms of cosmetic dentistry, most patients say that this procedure is not too uncomfortable at all. Anaesthetics make the area numb during the procedure, and you may only experience mild soreness afterwards that can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.

How do I care for my dental implants?

You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed.  Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Implants have an incredibly high success rate (around 98%). Some of the benefits are:

  • Improved appearance and comfort; they look natural, feel and function like your own teeth.
  • Improved speech; no fear of dentures slipping.
  • Easier eating and convenience in general.
  • Improved oral health.
  • Great durability.

Are there any risks associated with dental implants?

“Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risk. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.”

What is the durability of dental implants?

Implants and bridges are a very strong, stable and durable solution to missing or damaged teeth that will last many years. On occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.

How can I get a dental implant at Dental Care Glebe?

The first step is to book an appointment by phone, email or book online.
During your consultation, the dentist will examine your teeth and explain the treatment options for your specific case, timeframe and costs.
