    General Guide:
    Visiting the Dentist During
    COVID-19 Restrictions

It is common to have doubts regarding what is safe or not to do during this Coronavirus time.
Many patients have been contacting us to ask: - Is it safe to visit the dentist during COVID-19?
Yes, as long as your dentist follows all the Australian Dental Association guidelines by adopting all the appropriate risk management measures and PPE requirements while the pandemic lasts.
This includes your dentist responsibility to screen patients and assess the risk of transmission in the context of their practice and apply infection prevention and control precautions that address the level of risk of transmission
    Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, the
    Dental Board of Australia
    and the
    Australian Dental Association
have been managing risks and establishing guidelines to the dentistry industry professionals.
Various levels of restrictions, on the services provided by dentists, have been established along the way to ensure that dental health practitioners adopt safe and secure systems in their practices to avoid contamination.
Fortunately, you can have all your dental needs cared for at regular opening hours, as dentistry is one of the services exempt to the current stay-at-home rules.
As circumstances may change at any time, we prepared the following brief for you, so you can bookmark this page and come back at any time and refer to it.

Level 1 Restriction to Present: Dental Practices are open on regular hours.

All previous restrictions were lifted from the 7th of May 2020. All dental practices could re-open as an exemption to Greater Sydney lock-down restrictions and perform all dental treatments during regular hours; however, incorporating extra care regarding COVID-19 safety precautions.
At this level, you can undertake all the procedures you need to, as concerns your most common dental problems, such as:
    • Toothache
    • Tooth decay (cavities)
    • Gum disease (gingivitis)
    • Cracked or broken teeth
    • Sensitive teeth
    • Mouth Sores
    • Cosmetics (i.e. Dental Implants, Teeth Whitening, Porcelain Veneers, Invisalign etc.)
    • Bad Breath
    • Dental Emergencies
Attention: If you are at any hygiene risk and if you present clinical symptoms or being a confirmed case for COVID-19, any of your dental treatments must be postponed until you meet the health requirements!

Level 2 Restrictions: Emergencies Cases Only

Only emergency dental services are allowed.
However, all dental treatments that introduce the use of aerosols such as dental handpieces, ultrasonic scalers, and the air-water syringes were deferred as they can produce airborne contamination.
Dental implants and surgical teeth extractions should be referred to a specialist oral surgeon.
Note: The NSW Government and the Australian Dental Association have first restricted dental services from the 23rd of April to the 6th of May 2020.

Level 3 Restrictions: Urgent Cases Only

This is a very restrictive level. It limits treatments to urgent cases only, such as patients enduring acute pain, such as derived from root canal or extractions or who need immediate attention due to injured front teeth or any soft tissue pathology, such as ulcers.
Also, all dental treatments that generate aerosols (as mentioned on level 2) and dental implant treatment and extractions are to be referred to the specialist oral surgeon or maxillofacial surgeons.
The NSW Government and the Australian Dental Association have first restricted dental services from the 25th of March to the 6th of April 2020

What Are Our Precautions During COVID-19 times?

At Dental Care Glebe in Sydney, we screen patients before making appointments and again when entering the surgery.
Any at-risk patient is asked to defer any appointments. Everything is disinfected and disposable items utilized where possible.
Hand sanitizer present on coming to the surgery and patients asked to rinse with an antiseptic before any procedure.
Our dentists, hygienist and staff at Dental Care Glebe are here to make our patients visit to the dentist a safe, relaxed and pain-free experience.

    Be safe.
