Dentures

What is a denture?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissues. It may be made of acrylic resin or a combination with various metals.

Dentures are available as complete or partial. Complete dentures replace all the teeth, while a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position.

Why consider dentures?

Patients who come to our dental clinic in Glebe for dentures do so because they are missing some or all of their teeth. It is incredibly important to replace missing teeth. If you fail to do so, your remaining teeth might shift, or you might experience an inability to bite and chew properly. In some cases, missing teeth can cause issues with the facial structure, giving you a sagging facial appearance, which makes you look older than you are. The beauty of dentures today is that they are designed to be comfortable and functional. They are very similar in appearance to natural teeth, and can actually improve a smile or facial appearance.

What alternative treatments are available?

Dental implants can be used as an alternative treatment for missing teeth. The implants feel more like real teeth but are more expensive than dentures.

What are the types of dentures?

There are three basic types of dentures that we offer at Dental Care Glebe. These are:

  • Partial
  • Full
  • Implant supported

Removable partial dentures

These fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, resting partly on the gums and partly on the remaining teeth. They may be attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments, and they can be made of acrylic or a metal frame.

Removable complete dentures

These replace all the teeth in a jaw and fit directly on the gums and supporting bone. Complete dentures can also be made to attach to dental implants, and they can be made of acrylic or a metal frame.

Implant supported overdentures

Similar to the conventional complete denture, implant supported overdentures differ because they are supported by and attached to implants. These are used when someone doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone to support implants.

How are dentures fixed?

The process of fixing your dentures usually take a few weeks and many sittings. Your dentist will decide on the type of denture that will suit you’re the best. The following are the steps of fixing dentures:

  • A series of impressions are made of your jaw, and measurements are taken of the relation of the two jaws and the amount of space between them.
  • Models, plastic patterns, and/or wax forms are created from the impressions.
  • You will try out the model many times, and assessed for the perfect fit, shape and color before the final denture is made.
  • The final denture is cast.
  • Further adjustments are made if necessary.

Should I wear my dentures the whole day?

You will be given specific instructions on how long you can wear your dentures. Ideally, you will be instructed to wear them all the time, even while sleeping, for the first few days. This may feel uncomfortable, but it helps identify regions on the denture that may require alterations. Once these changes have been made, dentures should be remove before sleep and worn again in the morning. This gives your gums rest and enables normal stimulation and cleansing by your saliva and tongue.

Do new dentures feel strange?

Whether you have partial or complete denture, they may feel a bit odd or loose at the start. You can expect the adjustment period to last up to a few weeks until the muscles of the cheeks and tongue learn to keep them in place, and you learn to become comfortable removing and inserting them. You may experience minor irritation or soreness, or an increase in saliva flow, but these problems will go away.

Will I look different with dentures?

Dentures are modeled to look and feel just like your natural teeth. There may be only small changes in appearance. Sometimes, the dentures may even enhance your smile and improve your facial features.

Will my speech change with dentures?

Pronouncing certain words may be difficult with dentures. It would help if you say these words out loud. With time and a lot of practice, your speech will improve with dentures.

Will I find it difficult to eat with my new dentures?

You may find it uncomfortable to eat with your dentures for a few weeks. You may need some getting used to your new set of teeth. A few tips that will help you get used to your dentures:

  • Start eating soft foods cut into small pieces
  • Slowly chew your food on both sides of your mouth
  • Gradually add other foods to your diet until you return to a regular diet
  • Be careful while eating sharp bones, hot or hard foods
  • Avoid extremely sticky foods
  • Avoid chewing gum
  • Don't use toothpicks
