Dental Crowns or Caps
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are a covering that encases the entire surface of the tooth that lies at and above the gum line.
Why consider dental crowns?
Dental crowns serve to protect and strengthen the tooth structure that cannot otherwise be restored with fillings or other types of dental restorations. They may be needed in the following situations:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
- Tooth has a root canal - large filling and not much tooth left
- To cover a dental implant
- Protect teeth of child at high risk of tooth decay
What are the features and benefits of dental crowns?
When cemented into place, the crown restores the tooth to its original shape, size and strength, giving you a natural, long-lasting and beautiful smile.
How are dental crowns placed?
At Dental Care Glebe, our procedure of applying porcelain crowns usually requires two appointments. The process is as follows:
1: Before the procedure
The dentist performs a preliminary evaluation, which involves taking one or more X-rays of the area to check the roots of the tooth receiving the crown, as well as the surrounding bone. The dentist will also take a mould of your teeth and bite that will be used to create the custom crown.
2: Tooth preparation
The dentist will apply a local anaesthetic to the teeth and gums. While your teeth are numb, the natural tooth or adjacent teeth to the missing gap is given minor preparation or adjustments, such as filing down to make room for the crown. A teeth impression is made and sent off to the dental laboratory where the permanent crown will be made. A temporary crown or bridge is attached with temporary cement and will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks. Your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
3: Attaching the new crown
At your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
4: End result
The end result is a new tooth or gap replacement that looks and functions like a normal tooth.
How do I care for my teeth after a dental crown?
Care for your new crowns and bridges as you would your normal teeth, with proper brushing and flossing.
What is the durability of dental crowns?
At Dental Care Glebe, we provide porcelain crowns (caps), as they are the most popular and most resemble your natural teeth. While porcelain crowns are highly durable and will last you many years, they may eventually need to be replaced, like most dental restorations.
